There are three things the French do well:
1. make delicious pastries
2. hate on the British
3. and films. Mon Dieu, the films.

The latest on our radar is Young & Beautiful (Jeune et Jolie), which was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival last year. Fresh from the magical mind cave of director François Ozon (Swimming Pool, 5×2, 8 Women) this film is the story of Isabelle (Marine Vacth), a 17-year-old who loses her virginity on a summer holiday with her family. (Been there, done that, sister! Wait, no we haven’t were still virgins). Strangely unemotional and hard to read – which is the total fascination of this film – over the next four seasons Isabelle begins working as a call girl, and what follows is a very refreshing coming of age story that ties nothing into a bow. There are no concrete answers, no judgements (except your own), just a very gripping and immersive film that you’ll need a good hour or two afterwards to figure out what it means to you.

Model-turned-actress Marine Vacth is absolutely stunning as Isabelle, a true beauty but with so much going on beneath the surface that you realise she’s not just some darling doll, she is the hook, line and sinker of what we’re calling a psychological mystery – why does Isabelle do what she does, what motivates her, what does she feel? Play shrink and decide for yourself, because Ozon isn’t going to serve you the answers on a platter. Insert attitude-y finger snap. There’s also a killer blast of M83 towards the end that is supremely catching and memorable, and a beautiful performance by the ever-amazing Charlotte Rampling.

Young & Beautiful gets a score of four baby sloths out of five!

Thanks to the fine folk over at Entertainment One, we have 20 double passes to see Young & Beautiful.

To win simply tell us in 25 words or less, ‘What would a film about your life at age 17 be called?

Young & Beautiful is in cinemas 1 May, 2014.
