If you live near or around Brisbane, and are aged between 7 and 12, why not enter our writing competition?

SCHOOL CHILDREN ASKED "WRITE FROM THE HEART TO SAVE OUR NATIONAL ICON"

Queensland Koala Crusaders, the Sunshine Coast environmental group fighting to save Queensland’s rapidly dwindling Koalas and author Samantha Wheeler have teamed up to promote awareness to school children of the urgent plight of our national icon.

Koala numbers are down to less than 80,000 across Australia, with Queensland populations declining faster than in any other State. Children are the key to saving our remaining Koalas in years to come.

The challenge is for children from 7-12 years to create a dramatic story told from the point of view of the Koala. The winner of the “Smooch & Rose” Writing Competition will be an original,300-500 word fictional story, guaranteed to make a difference.

“We want children to imagine they’re a Koala. You’ve lived happily in this patch of bush all your life but suddenly things are changing. What will happen to you? Where will you go?” says Samantha Wheeler, Queensland environmentalist and popular author of Smooch & Rose. “We’d love to hear your stories! Inspire us, and win some amazing prizes!”

Prizes include:
A personalised ranger talk at one of our local Queensland Koala Parks, with an opportunity to meet real life rangers and beautiful koalas up close and personal.
An author talk at school presented by Samantha Wheeler who will share why she wrote Smooch & Rose, and how she went about planning her story
Book packs from UQP, including Smooch & Rose and Samantha’s new book, Spud & Charli
