A little like the way in which Downton Abbey and Boardwalk Empire marry period drama with modern soap opera, so too does Mr Selfridge. Indeed, it does so just as brilliantly. If you’ve not seen the series yet, but appreciate the aforementioned, Cream strongly recommends you take the elevator to the top floor and check out this classy series.

The gist of it centres on the real-life shenanigans of famous London department store founder, Harry Gordon Selfridge, showcasing his excess in lifestyle as much as his boldness in business. Surrounding Selfridge are a host of colourful characters, each whose lives are interweaved in the most intricate way for full dramatic effect. Characters who initially appear as simple innocent store assistants, for example, turn out to be the biggest gossiping bitches of them all, and so on.

Season 2 of Mr Selfridge carries on five years from the first season. It begins in 1914 England when Europe is on the brink of war and London is enjoying one last fling with hedonism and decadence. Having rocked the retail world with his pioneering store, Harry Selfridge (played by Jeremy Piven, ex-Entourage) now has his sights set on joining the establishment and rebuilding his family life. But his desperate attempts to do so keep coming up against titillating obstacles and in-yer-face challenges.

Revel in some old-school drama, some of which makes our new-age bitching and backstabbing look pretty tame in comparison.  Antonino Tati

‘Mr Selfridge: Season 2’ is available now on DVD through Universal Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, RRP $44.95.
