The new Air Asia Asean Pass opens up travel in 10 countries of South-East Asia.

And Air Asia is giving away two passes so that the winner can take a companion along. The prize, for two returns between Perth and Kuala Lumpur and then an Air Asia Asean Pass with 20 credits, is worth $2648.

The Asean Pass is an interesting initiative. ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) is a 10-country political and economic association consisting of Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, the Philippines, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.

The AirAsia Asean Pass lets travellers book Air Asia low fares to these countries using credits.

A spokesman for Air Asia explains: “The AirAsia Asean Pass is a similar concept to the Eurail pass that has been a go-to for travellers and backpackers in Europe for decades. Travellers can enjoy flights at a fixed rate to over 148 routes across all 10 countries in the Asean region.

“Travellers simply purchase a pass with either 10 or 20 flight credits. Flights under two hours use one credit, while flights of two hours and above use three credits.” The pass covers all 10 Asean countries.

The 10 credit pass has 30 days’ validity, the 20 credits have 60 days. Then just take off.

Different flights “cost” a different number of credits. For example, to fly from Kuala Lumpur to Penang in Malaysia or Phnom Penh in Cambodia is one credit. To fly from KL to Siem Reap in Cambodia is three credits.

AirAsia Group chief executive Tony Fernandes says: “The pass allows us to bridge communities and attract more foreign tourists to the region — it’s the perfect instrument to promote Asean integration.”

For bookings or further information visit airasia.com or book on your mobile at mobile.airasia.com. And at AirAsia’s one-stop travel portal at AirAsiaGo.com, there are more than 80,000 three-star, five-star and boutique hotels to add to flights.
