Australian music industry icons John Farnham and Olivia Newton-John joined forces for an Australia-wide, orchestra-backed tour. Now the tour has spawned an album of the same name: Two Strong Hearts Live (Sony Music).

Farnham and Newton-John between them have a bundle of hits and a significant body of work. Their decision to tour with a 60-piece orchestra lead by Chong Lim and perform many of their songs as duets led to big attendances around the country. The resulting album includes 21 songs — 15 of them sung jointly.

While both singers might have passed their peak, they seem to revel in the opportunity to perform together, feeding off each other on stage. A lot of their big hits are revisted here. Amongst the best numbers, perhaps surprisingly so considering the gap between this album and when the songs were first performed as part of the late 1970s’ movie Grease, are You’re The One That I Want and Summer Nights. Burn For You, originally a Farnham hit and always a cracker from day 1, also gets a good workout at this gig.

While some songs don’t quite get there (e.g. It’s A Long Way To The Top, although it’s performed with fitting enthusiasm), with a full orchestra, five strong backing singers and star guitarists Stuart Fraser and Brett Garsed all contributing solidly, overall it’s an enjoyable live performance.
