$100,000 Prize Australian landscape prize 2017 THEME: History and Place for the best portrayal of the Australian landscape which acknowledges the past About Art is woven into the history of Hadley’s Orient Hotel. The idea of the Hadley’s Art Prize, Hobart was born on the ninetieth anniversary of John Eldershaw’s exhibition of landscape paintings at the hotel. The Hadley’s Art Prize, Hobart seeks to contribute to the Tasmanian and Australian art scene, generating interest in cultural tourism and promoting the work of contemporary Australian landscape artists. Finalists will also have the opportunity to sell their work, establish new industry contacts and engage with the Tasmanian community. The 2017 theme invites artists connecting with place through the past, such as through family histories, cultural traditions, or tracing events, memories and stories in the land. To be held annually, the Hadley’s Art Prize, Hobart celebrates painting, printmaking and drawing by Australian artists over the age of eighteen. Prizes $100,000 Acquisitive Prize $2,250 x 4 Highly Commended Prize, awarded to four entries (non- acquisitive) $5,000 People’s Choice Award (non- acquisitive) The winning artwork will be acquired by Hadley’s Orient Hotel for their permanent collection of artwork at no additional cost. The judges’ discretion in all matters shall be absolute and decisions final and binding upon all artists and parties. • Artists who are selected as finalists from the digital submissions will be invited to send their work to the gallery of Hadley’s Orient Hotel, Hobart to be viewed by the judges in person for the selection of the winner and highly commended works. Finalists must deliver their work at their expense on or before the requested time, and may do so in person, by their nominated representative or by post, freight or courier companies. Any work not received by the requested time shall be excluded from the exhibition. Any technicians or third parties who provided assistance must be identified in the entry form. • May be in any medium (excluding photography and digital media) • Must be two dimensional and wall-mountable • Must not be larger than 150cm (height) x 150cm (width). Dimensions include the framing. • Shortlisted artworks must have flat D-rings attached to the back of the work. All other hanging equipment, such as hooks or wires, must be removed as it may damage other works. • May be a multi-panel work (maximum of 6 components) if the total fits within the size limit. • Must not exceed a maximum weight of 10kg. • Must be clearly labelled on the back with the artist’s name and the title of the work. • Must be suitably framed for hanging. A stretched canvas is considered framed. • Works that are deemed to be impractical for transportation and/ or impractical to display and/or do not meet the above requirements, or arrive damaged, or wet, or works that are deemed to pose a safety risk for gallery staff and viewers will not be considered eligible for exhibiting and will be excluded from the initial shortlist. • Every care will be taken during the handling and exhibition of the work, however, no responsibility shall be accepted for any damage however occurring, and insurance for the work will at all times be the responsibility of the artist. Judging • The judging panel will consist of three (3) Australian art specialists chosen by the Hadley’s Art Prize, Hobart Curator appointed by Hadley’s Orient Hotel. • Decisions by judges are at their absolute discretion and are final and binding on all artists. No correspondence will be entered into with any artist in relation to any matter concerning the art prize, the shortlisting of works, the finalists and/or the prizes or any other matter whatsoever. • Judging involves a pre-selection process from digital submissions through the Hadley’s Art Prize, Hobart website and in-person judging of shortlisted works (finalists) selected by the judges and received from artists. • Judges may consider anything they may in their absolute discretion deem relevant including the artist’s creativity, technical skill and theme statement provided with the work. • There can only be one winner. • Artists (or others on behalf of an artist) who attempt to influence the judging (either directly or indirectly) (the decision of which shall be in the absolute discretion of the judges) may cause the artist’s work to be disqualified. Notification of Results • Finalists will be notified by email and mail and announced on 12 June 2017. The notification letter will include details regarding the delivery of the work. • The winner will be informed prior to the exhibition opening to allow the opportunity to be present at the opening but will be required to maintain confidentiality. • The winning artist is expected to participate in prize-related media activities, such as interviews. Exhibition • All finalists’ works will be exhibited at such place, for such time (not exceeding four (4) months), and in such manner as Hadley’s Orient Hotel shall in their absolute discretion determine. • All decisions in relation to the exhibition are at the absolute discretion of Hadley’s Orient Hotel and shall be final and binding on all artists. • No correspondence will be entered into with any artist with any matter concerning the exhibition of their particular work and/or the works generally. The recipients of the highly commended prizes will also be announced and presented with cheques on opening night. Licensing Each of the finalists grant Hadley’s Orient Hotel (and its related entities) a non-exclusive licence to reproduce their work in digital and material form for prize-related and other purposes, including marketing, publicity, educational and publication uses, for a period of ten (10) years. The non-exclusive licence relates to all intellectual property (including copyright and moral rights) of the artist in the works. The artist’s copyright and moral rights will be respected. Hadley’s Orient Hotel may not sub-licence their rights to any other unrelated third party or utilise the works in digital or material forms after the said ten (10) years without the artist’s consent first had and obtained (which consent shall not be unreasonably withheld). Insurance • Hadley’s Orient Hotel does not accept any responsibility or liability for the artist’s works either before, during or after delivery or transit to and from the artist and/or during any exhibition. • Invigilators will be present during exhibition opening hours. • All risks and liability in the artist’s work remain with the artist at all times including those when the work is in the possession and control of Hadley’s Orient Hotel during the exhibition. • We recommend artists have their own insurance. See: https://visualarts.net.au/transitand-exhibition-insurance • Hadley’s Orient Hotel may as a condition of entry require the artist to provide a copy of the insurance of the work, and may disqualify work if no evidence of insurance cover is provided within seven (7) days of a request thereof. Sales Finalists can choose to have their work available for sale. Gallery or agent representation will be included on exhibition wall labels and in the exhibition catalogue. If the artist is registered for GST, the selling price must include GST. A 30% commission will be retained on all works sold. The net sale proceeds of any works sold will be paid to the artist within one (1) month of the exhibition closure. Payment will be made by bank transfer/ cheque in Australian dollars. Collection of Work Artists whose work has not sold will be notified shortly after the closure of the exhibition. Work that is not sold during the exhibition must be collected in person or by freight or courier within one (1) month of notification. Failure to collect the work within the said one (1) month may incur storage costs (of such amount as determined by Hadley’s Orient Hotel) until collected. Failure to collect any work within three (3) months of notification will be deemed abandonment of a work by the artist and title to the work shall pass to Hadley’s Orient Hotel. Hadley’s Orient Hotel accepts no responsibility or liability for holding or packing the artist’s work for storage and/or delivery (all of which responsibility shall remain with the artist at all times). Privacy All finalists agree that Hadley’s Orient Hotel may publish and utilise information and details relating to the finalists and their works. Personal information collected as a consequence of entry into the prize will only be used for the purposes of the administration, publication and promotion of the prize and of Hadley’s Orient Hotel (and its related entities).
