Win one of two F.D. Ryan toolkit rolls worth $110 each!

Frederick Daniel Ryan was born in 1909 in the coal-mining town of Wonthaggi, Victoria. At the age of 16 he was apprenticed as a wheelwright, then as a blacksmith. He ventured to Melbourne to start his first business, forging knives and tools for the footwear and horticulture trade.

Since 2014, his great-grandson James has continued the tradition of toolmaking: handmade artisan gardening tools forged from high-carbon steel, heat-treated for maximum strength and sharpened to a knife edge. These tools are a delight to use and beautiful to behold. With care they will last a lifetime.

For more on James, his great grandfather and to view the complete collection of tools on offer, head over to F.D. Ryan.

To win a prize pack including a hand-forged heart trowel, ho-mi and circle hoe, wrapped in a neat linen roll, tell us when and where F.D. Ryan was born. Answer- Frederick Daniel Ryan was born in 1909, in the coal mining town of Wonthaggi.
