WINCHESTER tells the tale of Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren) who was heiress to the Winchester fortune. The film, set in 1906, is inspired by a true story.

When Sarah’s husband and infant child die suddenly she believes she is cursed for making her fortune from selling Winchester rifles.

After seeing a medium, Sarah decides to purchase a house on an isolated stretch of land just outside San Francisco, California.

The bizarre construction on this house never ends, with no rhyme or reason to planning. Workers spend 24 hours a day, seven days a week over decades building more than 100 rooms.

When the board of directors of Winchester become concerned, Sarah agrees to have Dr Eric Price (Jason Clarke) come and evaluate her sanity.

Dr Price doesn’t know what he’s getting himself into as Sarah has been building a prison for vengeful spirits. These spirits terrifyingly want to settle a score with the Winchesters.

As expected, Helen Mirren’s performance in her role as Sarah is brilliant.

Filmed in Melbourne we see a great collection of Australian actors from Sarah Snook (The Dressmaker) to Bruce Spence (Mad Max 2).

The cinematography is flawless, especially in the low-light scenes, creating shadows and building the anticipation for the audience.

The score also helps create a sense of terror and anticipation and kept me on the edge of my seat.

I will admit I’m not a fan of horror films, I get scared easily watching them and I did have a few moments where I jumped in my seat. But overall, I couldn’t resist it due to Mirren taking the starring role.
