GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL TICKET GIVEAWAY

After going MIA last year, The German Film Festival makes a welcome return to Palace Cinemas later this month. Though its former organisers the Goethe-Institut are still actively involved, its now being run by Palace themselves.

It opens with a new film from acclaimed director Lars Kraume, The Silent Revolution, which is based on the 1956 true events in which a group of East German high school students stage a silent protest in class with far-reaching consequences. Then closes two weeks later with a new digitally restored versions of Wim Wenders magnificent 1987 classic, The Wings of Desire.

In between its contemporary section features 15 new German films straight from the international festival circuit and cinema screens of Europe. And for those who erroneously think that Germans “don’t do comedy”, there’s plenty of light and humorous films on offer – notably the tongue-in-cheek domestic smash hit triology  Fack ju Göhte (yes you read that right) that will screen in all its non-PC, laugh-out-loud three part glory.

Two films we’ll be looking out for are Niels Laupert’s intimate romantic drama Whatever Happens (pic above) and Three Peaks, a superbly crafted and utterly gripping drama starring about a seemingly idyllic family on holiday in the Italian Dolomites.

Check the festival trailer here.

Sydney dates are May 22 to June 5 at Palace Norton Street and Chauvel Cinema. Head to the website for the Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Adelaide dates and venues, where you’ll find plenty more about this year’s line-up. And you can book tickets there too.

* Thanks to Palace Cinemas, we have five double in-season passes to give away. There’s no tricky questions to answer, just head to the German Film Festival website and name just one of the films on offer this year, then email us at info@ciaomagazine.com.au with your answer. Winners will receive a pass valid for any film and session (except opening, closing and special events). We’ll mail it out, so do include a postal address. Competition closes midday Friday May 18.
