WINTER IS whale -watching season in Queensland and the majestic ocean giants haven’t wasted any time arriving off our coastline. The phenomenal growth in the humpback whale population has resulted in the marine mammals beginning their annual migration weeks early from Antarctica to the state’s warm tropical waters. This season, more than 30,000 whales are expected to make the 5000km migration north and the large number of early sightings has even prompted some tourism operators to bring their whale-watching tours forward. There have been several sightings off the south-east Queensland coast so whale enthusiasts should have their eyes peeled in coming weeks.
