A fascinating look at the history of film censorship in Australia. An essay film by filmmaker and archivist Sari Braithwaite, [Censored] offers an overview of film censorship in Australia, told through an ever-changing collage of images compiled from the footage that was cut from films released domestically between 1951 and 1978. Alongside these shifting sequences – which range from the comically absurd to the brutal, from educational films to sexual material, and all points in-between – Braithwaite talks about the images, the films, and the shifting cultural mores that have changed the processes of classification and the response to it. A fascinating work offering a unique insight into exactly what the censor saw, and you, your parents and grandparents couldn’t (at least until now), [Censored]is a fascinating examination of cinema and society, of what it means to watch film, the power of film, and the power of the censor’s cuts.
