Penned more than 200 years ago, the story strikes a brutally relevant chord in 2018 with sexual misconduct at the forefront of the world’s collective consciousness. Delivering a reimagined production with director Lindy Hume at the helm, Opera Queensland is bringing a more satisfying end to the story in the Brisbane performance. Set in working class Victorian London, where Jack the Ripper stalks and the aristocracy lurk to get a taste of the seedy side of life, the opera tells the chilling tale of rapist and murderer Don Giovanni’s final days. Bringing together 200 fearless women from the Brisbane community – of varying ages, backgrounds and body sizes – the thrilling final sequence will see the treacherous Don Giovanni dragged to his end by his hundreds of victims. With rising international star Duncan Rock making his Australian debut in the title role and conductor Johannes Fritzsch steering the play, this sobering take on the iconic opera is long overdue.
