Score free tickets to award-winning musical Come From Away

Stages are opening back up after the pandemic crippled the entertainment industry, and one award-winning musical headed to Sydney is all about picking back up after tragedy.

Come From Away is playing from June 3 at the Capitol Theatre, and Australian Community Media has a batch of double passes to give away.

The musical tells the true story of 7000 air passengers who were grounded in Newfoundland, Canada in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

The Australian production of Come From Away is the first to return to the stage after Covid, with the companies on Broadway, in London, Toronto and the North American Tour all on hiatus.

Come From Away was the product of award-winning husband and wife duo David Hein and Irene Sankoff - who wrote the book, music and lyrics.

They travelled to Newfoundland and interviewed thousands of locals about the 'come from aways' - a Canadian term for people who are from out of town - who were stuck in 2001. They compiled their stories into a musical to share with the world.

The small Gander community welcomed the stranded passengers into their lives and provided hope and compassion in a difficult time.

Producer Rodney Rigby said Australia was in an enviable position when it came to live theatre.

"The Australian production is incredibly fortunate to raise the curtain," he said.

"We are able to do so because of the resilience of everyday Australians, who have a spirit of kindness and humanity that we have seen throughout the bushfires and the pandemic - it is the same spirit that Come From Away embodies."

Come From Away is directed by Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley (Diana, Memphis) and choreographed by Olivier Award Winner Kelly Devine (Diana, Rock of Ages, Rocky).

The Sydney season kicks off at the Capitol Theatre on Thursday, June 3. Tickets start at $85. More: comefromaway.com.au.
