The Fabelmans is a deeply personal portrait of a 20th century American childhood, namely Steven Spielberg’s childhood.

A biopic of sorts, the film is a cinematic memory of the forces, and family, that shaped the filmmaker’s life and career.

Full of passion and peppered with humour, the film is never self-congratulatory nor too soppy. In short, it’s a universal coming-of-age story about an isolated young man’s pursuit of his dreams. Scratch deeper and you realise it is actually an exploration of love, artistic ambition, sacrifice and the moments of discovery that allow us to see the truth about ourselves – and our parents – with clarity and compassion.

Directed by Spielberg himself, the film stars Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen and Gabriel LaBelle (as Sammy – the Steven character), The Fabelmans is far more than your average feelgood family movie.

While the film is about the director himself, film buffs will notice he pays tribute to the other greats before him – a glint in the mother’s eye reminding you of frames from a Hitchcock movie, the arrival of a funny uncle akin to a scene by William Friedkin, and of course one or two nods to Stanley Kubrick.

In fact, the film is very much a love letter to the art of cinema-making. It certainly is a good enough reason to take a break from your Netflix-bingeing and get back into an actual movie theatre to see something thoroughly enjoyable.

Courtesy of Studio Canal Australia, Cream has 10 double passes to give away to see The Fabelmans in cinemas January 5. To try winning a double pass, simply email the Subject heading ‘The Fabelmans’ along with your name, address and the answer to the question, What is your all-time favourite Steven Spielberg movie? Competition closes 5pm AWST, Wednesday 4th January, 2023.
