Your weekend Your waterway – photo competition 2023

Do you love getting out and about and taking snaps on the Thomson, Macalister or Latrobe rivers and wetlands? If so, this competition is for you!

West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority is excited to announce the 2023 ‘Your Weekend, Your Waterway Photo Competition’.

All you need to do is grab your camera or phone, head out into the catchment and capture and submit your best photos of any of these three rivers and wetlands via our website (see link below).

There is $550 worth of shopping vouchers up for grabs, for winners of each category to spend in their local community along with an overall best photo prize.

“We have chosen these three waterways because they receive deliveries of ‘water for the environment’ each year,” said CEO of the WGCMA, Martin Fuller.

Victoria’s rivers and wetlands supply water for towns, industry and food production. This means we remove a large part of the water that would normally flow into these ecosystems.

To limit this impact, Victoria has ‘environmental water’ in water storages. This water is stored and released to support the animals and plants that live in rivers and wetlands.

“Allocations of environmental water play an important role in improving the health of rivers and wetlands in West Gippsland and this is guided by Seasonal Watering Plans approved by the Victorian Environmental Water Holder,” said Martin.

“Images from this photo comp will feature in the proposal and help to promote the benefits of environmental water in both dry and wet years.”

The waterways that receive environmental water deliveries in West Gippsland form the competition categories. So, get snapping your pics at:

Durt-Yowan (Latrobe River) anywhere downstream from Lake Narracan, including the Lower Latrobe Wetlands ie: Dowd Morass, Heart Morass and Sale Common
Wirn wirndook Yeerung (Macalister River) anywhere downstream from Lake Glenmaggie
Carran Carran (Thomson River), including Heyfield Wetlands, anywhere downstream from the Thomson Reservoir.

“We’re looking for photos showing people using these waterways for their leisure. They might be boating, swimming or having a snooze by a riverbank.” added Martin Fuller.

The West Gippsland CMA’s Your Weekend. Your Waterway Photo Competition is open from Thursday 9  February to Friday 10 March 2023, please read the terms and conditions before submitting your entry.
Winners will be announced before 20 March 2023.
