The Fitzroy Readers let children gain confidence by reading books for themselves.
There are seventy Readers (stories), sold in seven boxes of 10 stories each. Naturally the first few stories are very simple – like the first story called The Fat Cat.
Early stories have simple sounds like 'o' as in 'dog'; later stories have sounds like 'ay' as in 'day' and 'all' as in 'ball'; even later stories have sounds like 'ire' and 'tion'. Each step is small. But by the time you have read through to the 70th story, you can read the newspaper!
