2018 Award
The Mandorla Committee are pleased to announce that entries for the 2018 Mandorla Art Award are now open!
Entry is open to artists from all over Australia working in a range of mediums.  Artists will be in the running for $42,000 worth of prizes including the Mandorla Award, which is a $25,000 acquisitive prize sponsored by St John of God Healthcare.  The winning artwork will become part of the Mandorla art collection joining the likes of previous winners  Julie Dowling, John Coburn, Nigel Hewitt and Paul Kaptein.

The People’s choice award ($2,000) is sponsored by the Benedictine Community of New Norcia where the collection is housed.

A further two highly commended awards of $5,000 will also be awarded.

The Mandorla Art Award employs a thematic spiritual inspiration that changes with each exhibition. These inspirations are defined by quotations from the Bible and all participating artists are required to interpret these in their own way.

Submissions for the 2018 Mandorla Art Award must clearly demonstrate a direct relationship to the theme, which in 2018 is:

“And then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” (Rev 21:1-2).

2018 Mandorla Art Award
The Theme
The Mandorla Art Award employs a thematic spiritual inspiration that changes with each exhibition. These inspirations are defined by quotations from the Bible and all participating artists are required to interpret these in their own way.
Submissions for the 2018 Mandorla Art Award must clearly demonstrate a direct relationship to the theme.
The theme for the 2018 Mandorla Art Award is:

Exhibition Details
The Mandorla Art Award Finalists’ Exhibition is to be held at Turner Galleries, 470 William Street, Northbridge and will be open to the public from 2 – 30 June 2018.
The official Mandorla Art Award presentation evening will be held at 6pm Friday 1 June 2018.
Artworks chosen as Finalists in the award will be displayed in the Finalists’ Exhibition at Turner Galleries and the judging panel will select the winning artworks.
Prize Structure
The major prize for the 2018 Mandorla Art Award is a $25,000 acquisitive prize.
The winning work will become part of the permanent collection of the Mandorla Centre for Inner Peace Inc, and is kept in trust at the New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery, WA.
The $25,000 prize money includes Mandorla’s acquisition of the work.
In addition to the major acquisitive award, two highly commended non-acquisitive awards of $5,000 are offered and $2,000 for the People’s Choice Award winner.
Total prize pool is $37,000.
 

Entry Requirements and Details
Entry to The Mandorla Art Award is open to all artists resident in Australia, aged 18 years and over.
Entry is limited to one artwork per person.
Failure to comply with any of the conditions of entry will deem the entry disqualified.
Online entries must be received by 5:00pm WST (GMT +8), Monday 12 March 2018. Please note that entries received after the closing date and time will NOT be accepted. The online entry form will generate an automated response if your entry has been successfully submitted.  If you do not receive this email please try again or contact the Curator at curator@mandorlaart.com
Entry Process: Applicants must submit an Entry Form online at www.mandorlaart.com All fields are to be completed in the Entry Form and is to be accompanied by the Entry Fee, Artist’s Statement, Artist Biography, CV and up to 4 high resolution images (at least 300dpi, no greater than 5MB each, JPG or PNG only) of the one work for consideration – at least one image must be of the entire work and at least one image must be a close up showing the detail of the work.
Artists working in new media (digital video works) will be required to submit a single still of the artwork through the online Entry Form, as well as supplying a link to a file sharing service for moving images of the artwork entry in .mp4 or .mov file formats (maximum duration of 4 minutes).
Entry Fee: All entry forms must be accompanied by the appropriate entry fee of $AU50 per work (including GST).  Payment will be made online at the time of submitting the Entry Form.
Artist’s Statement: Artists are to submit a synopsis of the submitted work to a maximum of 700 characters, including spaces.
Artist Biography: Artists are to provide an overview of their artistic practise, to a maximum of 700 characters, including spaces.
The Artist Statement and Artist Biography will be used for publication purposes. Please be aware that they may be edited. Please ensure spelling and grammar is correct.
Artists must submit a current CV no longer than 2 A4 pages.
No late changes will be accepted.
Artworks to be hung must be no larger than 160cmx160cm (including frame) and must not exceed 15kg.
3D works must be no larger than 120 x 120 x 120cm and must not exceed 50kg.
Multiple pieces are only accepted where they constitute a single entry and do not exceed the specified dimensions and weight in total when displayed.
A range of disciplines and mediums are encouraged.
Artworks must be the original work of the artist and not infringe copyright.
Artworks must be executed entirely during the 12 months leading up to the exhibition, commencing 1 June 2018.
Artworks must be completed at the time of submission of the Entry Form and images.
Artworks must not have been previously exhibited.
Mandorla Art Award artworks must be for sale. If the artist is registered for GST, the selling price must be GST inclusive.
Commission: A commission of 40% will apply in the event of an artwork being sold. For those artists whose work is represented by a gallery, this commission will be divided equally between the gallery and the Mandorla Art Award.   
 

Ownership and Risk/Responsibilities
The Artist agrees that they shall retain ownership of the artwork until sold and paid in full.
Mandorla will exercise all due care in the handling and protection of the artwork.
Mandorla will not be held responsible for any loss or damage whatsoever or however caused to any work while in their custody.
Each artist is responsible for acquiring his/her own insurance to cover the artwork during transportation and while on display in the exhibition.
All shipping costs will be the responsibility of the artist, including return freight costs for unsold artworks.  Unsold artworks must be collected by the artist or their agent at the closure of the exhibition or as directed by the Curator.
 

Publicity and Promotional Material
Copyright statement: The Mandorla Art Award Committee respects the fact that artists always retain the copyright of the image of their own work. As an acquisitive award the Mandorla Art Award winners are kept as an important collection of contemporary Christian art and are housed in the art gallery at the Benedictine Monastery of the Holy Trinity in New Norcia where all, or part of the collection, is housed and exhibited on a regular basis. As a condition of entry, artists accept that the image of their work can be used by the Mandorla Art Award Committee and the New Norcia Museum & Art Gallery for publicity purposes and will always be appropriately acknowledged. Should the images be used for fundraising, the artist will be consulted and any resultant profit will be shared between the artist/s and the Committee at an agreed rate.
Mandorla reserves the right to document, reproduce or otherwise use images of any artwork entered into the Art Awards for purposes associated with the Awards, without charge.
Artists will be responsible for satisfying copyright requirements, should they have quoted or reproduced from any printed or other material.
 

Shortlisting of entries
Selection Process: Acceptance into this Award is via a selection process only. An independent selection panel will comprise three professionals from the arts and theological community.
The Selection panel will consider the artist’s approach to the theme and artistic excellence when making the selection of artworks to be included in the Finalists’ Exhibition.
The selection panel will only utilise the information provided by the artist in their submission to the Award.
All Artists will be advised of the outcome of the selection of finalists by Monday 16 April 2018.
 

Judging and Announcement of Winners
A second independent Judging panel will comprise two arts specialists and one theologian to determine the Award winners.
The Judges’ decision is final and no correspondence shall be entered into.  The winner will be advised by telephone immediately after judging takes place on Friday 1 June 2018.
The announcement of the prize winners will be made at the Award Opening at Turner Galleries, 470 William Street, Northbridge at 6pm Friday 1 June 2018.
 

Information for Finalists – Artwork Delivery and Collection
The Finalists’ artworks will be exhibited at Turner Galleries.  The gallery is open 5 days a week Tuesday to Saturday 11am–5pm.
 

Delivery: Artworks must be delivered to Turner Galleries, 470 William Street, Northbridge on Tuesday 29 May 2018 between 11am and 2pm.
Artworks to be hung must be fitted with large ‘D’ rings (20mm) for hanging on the back of the work (approx. 10cm from the top) and hanging cord/wire attached.
Artworks must be clearly labelled with the Artist’s name and the artwork title on the back of the work.
All artworks will be professionally presented within the gallery.  The exhibition venue has an excellent commercial reputation and client base to promote the sale of the artworks in the exhibition.
Artists will be notified prior to Collection Day if their artwork has sold or has been selected to be part of the Touring Exhibition.
 

Collection: Artworks are to be collected on Tuesday 3 July between 11am and 2pm.
Freighting of artworks is arranged by the artist, at the artist’s expense.
Artworks not collected from Turner Galleries at the above time will be stored for 10 days only at The Priory, 2 Morgans Street, Tuart Hill. If not collected within this time, the artwork may be auctioned with the proceeds going to charity.
The People’s Choice Award will be announced by the Abbot of the Benedictine Community of New Norcia at the opening of the Touring Exhibition at New Norcia Museum & Art Gallery (date TBA).
 

Touring Exhibition
After the Finalists’ Exhibition at Turner Galleries, a selection of works will be chosen to be part of the Mandorla Art Award Touring Exhibition.  The first venue will be the prestigious New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery (WA).  Additional touring venues are to be confirmed.  The Touring Exhibition provides further exposure for the selected artist’s work for approximately two months.
All Finalists’ artworks are to be made available for the touring exhibition.
Artists will be notified prior to collection day if their artwork has been selected to tour.
Not all Finalists’ work will be able to be selected for the Touring Exhibition due to restrictions within the touring venues.
At the conclusion of the Touring Exhibition, artworks will be transported to The Priory, 2 Morgans Street, Tuart Hill WA where they will be available for collection.

Artists who wish to ship their artwork as rolled canvas or digital print and have stretched or framed in Perth can contact Art Presentations to discuss framing arrangements.
