The Mallacoota Arts Council is pleased to announce that the EJ Brady Short Story Competition is up and running for 2012-2013! This is the eighteenth year that the competition has been held, and as part of its coming of age, some exciting changes have been made to the scope and structure of the competition.

Named in honour of local poet Edwin James Brady (1869 - 1952), the competition recognises Mallacoota's long-standing literary and artistic traditions. But it looks far beyond the tiny community of Mallacoota in search of talented storytellers from throughoutAustraliaand beyond.

As in previous years, there are two categories: the Major Short Story, for stories of 2500 words or less, and the Very Short Story, for stories under 700 words. Fabulous accolades and generous monetary prizes are bestowed upon the winners. The best Major Short Story receives $1500, with a runner up prize of $200. The best Very Short Story will be awarded $500. Writers can enter one or both categories, with as many stories as they like.

This year will also feature the EJ Brady Youth Award, open to students aged sixteen years and under who live in the regions of East Gippsland or the Bega Valley. Stories entered in this category should be no longer than 700 words, and as with all stories in the competition, may be written on any theme. The winning story will be awarded $200. There are no fees for entering this category of the competition.

All stories must be receivedby Friday, November 30th, 2012. Judging will take place over summer, and the winners will be announced as part of Mallacoota's Easter celebrations.
