There are a few infamous John Cale anecdotes that get rolled out at dinner parties. One involves a chicken, a knife, a glass of Pimms and a roomful of punks high on speed. Then there’s the one about the record label that released an album of demos against his wishes. And what about the one where he produced the debut album by legendary drug hoovers Happy Mondays and avoided all prohibited substances by eating tangerines without pips. And who can forget his infamous 1984 coked-out performance of Heartbreak Hotel on German TV. Oh yeah, we’ve all been there. Cale has a new album out. It’s terrific, as you’d expect.
