Brief Encounter – Thu 10 October
Created by the award-winning Cornwall-based Kneehigh Theatre, prepare to be swept away by this heartwarming show: a marvel of unbridled joy, tempered by the heartache of love. A radiant adaptation of the classic 1945 film Brief Encounter, itself inspired by Noel Coward’s Still Life stage play, this is the tale of a sudden romance that sparks, keenly and unexpectedly, in an unremarkable British railway tea room.
Weaving black-and-white film and featuring dance, original music and a bevy of Coward’s best loved songs, Brief Encounter bolsters Kneehigh’s reputation as one of the UK’s most innovative theatre companies.
Fearless Nadia – Sun 13 October
Fearless Nadia was one of the brightest lights of 1930s and 40s Bombay cinema making more than 50 films until retiring at 60. In celebrating Indian Cinema and the Bollywood superstar, Ben Walsh will front 12-strong coalition of Australian and Indian musicians to perform an energetic original score for her most well known film Diamond Queen (1940), featuring the sounds of the tabla (composed by Aneesh Pradhan), shenai, sarangi, dholak and harmonium combined with the trumpet, drums, violin, clarinet, and accompanied by dancer Shruti Ghosh.
Wagner and the orchestra – Sat 19 October
Award--winning conductor Asher Fisch fronts the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and soprano Lisa Gasteen for an evening of Wagnerian mastery – Wagner and the Orchestra. Both individually renowned for their powerful recitals of Wagner’s operas, Lisa Gasteen and Asher Fisch lead the MSO through a suite of some of Wagner’s greatest romantic works, bringing unparalleled depth to the operatic richness of his compositions.
