Networking In Purgatory (vinyl giveaway)

Networking In Purgatory is the fifth album by former Melbourne-based musician Ned Collette, and the third with his band Wirewalker. The title could be an ode to his recent relocation to Berlin (where the album was partly recorded), or maybe it’s entirely poetic. His lyrics mingle plaintive confessions with Latin guitars and drum machines, a mix of old-timey pop, lo-fi folk and soundscaping interludes.

Shifting between an impassive deadpan and a Brian Ferry-like tenor, Collette's voice is offset by Wirewalker’s sometimes jaunty, sometimes ambient sound. Wafting synths overtake on the propulsive "Vanitas Quack", while "Across The Frozen Bridge" pairs acoustic guitar with the Mellotron, a flute-like tape machine.

The album tends a little more down-beat than 2012’s 2, but it has a warmth that rewards repeat listens, suggesting that purgatory mightn't be so bad.

Networking In Purgatory is out now, and thanks to Remote Control Records we have a copy on vinyl to give away. To enter, send you name and address to giveaways@smithjournal.com.au
