If you’ve seen Coogan and Brydon in The Trip, you’ll know their playful bickering and constant impersonations add the levity and personality that make any road trip really memorable. Their motivation in The Trip to Italy is the same as in the original film: a travel article on fine dining establishments.
 
It would be easy to envy these two accomplished - and at times arrogant - actors, as they eat amazing meals and flirt with pretty women on restaurant verandas overlooking the Adriatic. But the storyline and performances balance out their good fortune by giving insights into the pathos of their personal lives. It’s not surprising this is a very funny film, but it is surprising that it’s much richer than just that.
