Mumbai’s famously efficient lunchbox delivery system transports thousands of meals every day from kitchens to offices. A study found that just one in a million lunchboxes is ever delivered to the wrong address. The Lunchbox is the story of that one mistaken delivery.

This delicious celebration of film, food and romance first came to our attention at last year’s Busan International Film Festival before again appearing among our favourites at the 2014 Sydney Film Festival.

The story is set in motion when neglected housewife Ila attempts to spice up her marriage by preparing a special lunch for her husband. When it is accidentally delivered to Saajan, a lonely widower on the brink of retirement, they exchange notes to attempt to get to the bottom of the mistaken delivery. Gradually their notes evolve into intimate confessions, detailing their loneliness, memories, fears and small joys. The slow development of their relationship is explored with delicacy and charm, also allowing for a powerful insight into the loneliness that can often accompany life in a metropolis.

Irrfan Kham (of Life of Pi and Slumdog Millionaire fame) delivers a quietly powerful performance as the gruff widower, with model-turned-actor Nimrat Kaur co-starring as Ila. Assisted by their delightful performances, writer-director Ritesh Batra has managed to craft a charming and whimsical journey into Mumbai’s heart and soul.
