In a coup for Hunter performing arts, the theatrical license to produce Disney favourite Little Mermaid Jnr for the first time in Australia was won by Hunter Region Drama School (HRDS). The production sees 50 talented local kids from 9 to 19 years on stage at the Civic Theatre for a three day run from 9-11 October 2014.
These kids travel en masse to the USA to perform parts of Little Mermaid Jnr at the International Musical Theatre Festival in Atlanta Georgia in January 2015 – the first group ever to represent Australia at this prestigious event. Plus the cast will do theatre workshops at New York’s famed Juilliard dance, drama and music school and Hollywood movie auditions.
The Civic Theatre production of Little Mermaid is expected to attract audiences from Sydney, the Central Coast and Upper Hunter.
As Little Mermaid movies are a favourite with little girls, we are inviting littlies to wear their favourite “mer” costume to the performances according to producer Daniel Stoddart. “But Ariel and company are much-loved by people of all ages, and we’ve had strong interest from many people - not so little anymore,” Mr Stoddart said.
“This production will be like nothing Newcastle has seen before. We’ve taken the Hunter’s outstanding young talent, secured an internationally-loved story and songs. We’ve combined these with innovative sets and costumes to deliver a show that would shine on Broadway,” he added.
Tickets are available at Ticketek on 4929 1977.
