Remember to always pick one title only from each supplier, and double check your address details R&J Icon Belle_2D Review by Betty Hardy Icon Films “Belle” This wonderful new release “Belle” tells the moving true story of the woman whose life and love defied convention and left its mark on history. Belle was the illegitimate mixed – race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral John Lindsay. Her father rescued her from destitution when she was a child, but due to his commitments to the Royal Navy, Belle is left in the care of her great Uncle Lord Mansfield. ‘The Chief Justice of England.’ Surrounded by the luxury Belle’s linage does afford her, certain privileges are denied as the color of her skin prevents her from fully being able to participate in the traditions of her social standing. The film does show you the snobbery and attitudes that prevailed in those early English times. Young ladies and mothers, with their foppish arrogant sons, spend a certain amount of time eyeing off possible candidates for marriage as long as they have money, however the main story is about Belle as she tries to cope with the distain she feels for these attitudes, and her dawning awareness of the feeling towards slaves. Belle does fall for an idealistic vicars son who is bent on changes to the slavery trade, and with her help, shapes the Chief Justices role in ending slavery in England. Based on a true story, there is some feeling that some of the story was actual truth and a lot was fiction. However, that said, we found it totally absorbing and compelling viewing. Belle boasts a cast of seasoned veterans and some new faces As always, these period dramas from the BBC are lavish and elegant. Listed as a Drama /Biography the running time is 104 mins.
