THE story of Australia's most famous bushranger will be told on the Newcastle Civic Theatre stage next month.

Queensland Theatre Company's Kelly, based on the life of Ned Kelly and his relationship with his gang, will show at Civic Theatre on Thursday, July 2.

Kelly was written by Queensland playwright Matthew Ryan and has attracted critical acclaim.

On June 26, 1880, Ned Kelly, Joe Byrne, Steve Hart and Dan Kelly made their famous last stand at Glenrowan.

The showdown condemned Ned to the gallows, with Byrne, Hart and Dan all presumably dead.

While history states Dan perished in the Glenrowan Hotel fire, Ryan explores the myth that he escaped.

The audience watches as Dan, disguised as a priest, visits Ned in his grimy cell at Old Melbourne Gaol.

Dan seeks Ned's forgiveness before fleeing to Queensland to forget his past, with a new name and a new life.

"Kelly gets our national conscience ticking at a different tempo," QTC artistic director Wesley Enoch said.

"We begin to weigh up one brother's self-proclaimed cowardice against the other's bravery."

Tickets to the Kelly performance in Newcastle, available from Ticketek or civictheatrenewcastle.com.au, cost $48 for adults.

The Examiner has one double pass to the July 2 show, which starts at 8pm. To win, send your name and contact details in an email titled "Kelly" to ewatts@fairfaxmedia.com.au. The winner will be notified by 3pm on Wednesday, July 1.
