Forget the Hollywood blockbuster: if you really want to feel what it’s like on top of Everest, you need to see Sherpa, the stunning documentary screening at the Adelaide Film Festival.

Directed by Adelaide-born Jennifer Peedom, the film explores the ethical complexities that surround Nepal’s Sherpas – the unsung local heroes who allow wealthy and adventurous climbers from around the world to achieve their ambitions of scaling Everest. In 2013 a series of brawls broke out between the Sherpas and the western climbers, the result of growing tensions between the two camps about how the mountain – and its native people – should be treated. The tensions lingered for years, but when an avalanche killed 16 Sherpas in 2014, climbing on Everest changed forever.
