WIN ONE OF FIVE COPIES OF THE WITCH (DVD)!

We know all the classic fairy tales about witches – the broomsticks, the black cats, the pointy hats, the Hermione Grangers – but once upon a time, the fear of witches was actually very real. People used to be really, really stupid, you see. It probably didn't help that the Church at the time was trying to keep everyone in check by fear-mongering tales of Hell, the Devil and sin.

In that vein, The Witch describes itself as a "New-England folktale". It's about a family in the 1630s that is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession – or at least, the suspicion and excrutiating fear of those things.

Panic and despair envelops a farmer (Ralph Ine-son), his wife (Kate Dickie) and four of their children when youngest son Samuel suddenly vanishes. The family blames Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy), their oldest daughter, who was watching the boy at the time of his disappearance. Suspicion and paranoia mounts when twin siblings Mercy (Ellie Grainger) and Jonas (Lucas Dawson) suspect Thomasin of witchcraft, testing the clan's faith, loyalty and love to one another. And don't even get me started on that black, satanic-looking goat. Oh you, satanic goat. You so creepy.

With beautiful production design and compelling visuals, The Witch is said to be one of the most captivating and thought-provoking horror films in years. Our own review described it as "beautifully shot, very well acted and, at times, excruciating".

For your chance to win one of five copies of The Witch on DVD, all you have to do is email allan@bmamag.com and cast a spell on us. Tell us the magic words!

Email the editor with your name, phone number and address to see if you can pick up yourself a one of these.
Go for it, give it a tweet!
