Win wine from Glenguin Estate in the Hunter Valley
Classic wines from a hidden Hunter gem
Subscribe to VisitVineyards.com

Glenguin Estate and Vineyard, Hunter Valley NSWGlenguin 2015 Semillon

Glenguin Estate is family-owned and operated vineyard, close to the village of Broke in the Hunter Valley. It might be small but it's also a hidden gem whose facets the 2017 James Halliday Wine Companion has highlighted with a five star award.

With wine only crafted in good vintages, their classic Hunter semillons and shirazes are often gone quickly so four VisitVineyards subscribers will be very lucky when they each take delivery of a mixed half case!

The vineyard was planted in the late 1980s and Glenguin Estate was established in the early 1990s by Robin Tedder MW as Vigneron and Andrew Tedder as Viticulturist.

Whilst this recent history is but 20-30 years old, there's deeper stories involved with this vineyard. The vines are direct descendants of those planted at Kirkton in the 1820s by James Busby, a viticulturist who brought some 500 cuttings from collections from Europe's wine regions, and the vigneron himself is the third Baron of Glenguin.

Robin's grandfather, Sir Arthur Tedder was Marshall of the Royal Air Force and this peerage was created for him in 1946. The name Glenguin comes from the original Scots Gaelic name of the highland whisky distillery now called Glengoyne and the distillery property happens to be the birthplace of Sir Arthur. And so the links to fine drinks continue across the other side of the world!

Shiraz and semillon are two of Australia's oldest wine styles and together Robin and Andrew strive to make exciting balanced wines that speak of where they come from.

When the property was purchased it had been grazed by cattle which can significantly denude a landscape. Using one about 20% for vines, the Tedders replanted over 800 trees where just 30 odd ironbarks had stood and now this land, including around 2km of the riverfront is left for nature to take over. And it has, wildlife has returned and  human intervention only lends a hand when weeds make an appearance.

Each wine comes from a small individual block in a vineyard where organic and biodynamic practices are carried out and everything is still done by hand. This means production of Glenguin wine is extremely limited with just a few hundred cases of each of our wines which are only made in good vintages. Robin also sources high quality fruit from other vineyards to craft wine that too, speaks of its home soils.

All these can be tasted at their cellar door, where you can talk to the people who live on the estate, grow the grapes and make the wine. At this time of year, it's especially welcoming inside with an open fire to warm by as you sip the wines!

Four lucky subscribers will each win a half dozen Glenguin wines - three bottles of the 2015 Semillon and three of the 2014 Stonybroke Shiraz  so enter below and you too could be sipping on history with these classic wines from Glenguin Estate of the Hunter Valley.
