Win a Golden Ticket
Buy your Sydney Open Pass by 15 October for the chance to win a Golden Ticket to the special limited-capacity site, the Tank Stream. Don’t miss this exclusive chance to step inside this state heritage-listed tunnel built by convicts and stonemasons.
The Tank Stream

We know it today as the Tank Stream – an underground curiosity – but it was a vital source of water for the First Fleeters, and before them, the First Australians. Captain Arthur Phillip chose Circular Quay as the birthplace of the new colony, in part because of this freshwater stream running right into the harbour from a swamp at the western end of Hyde Park. Having supplied water and stone tools to the Gadigal people for tens of thousands of years, it would serve as the main water supply for the first 40 years of Sydney’s European life. But by 1826 it was so polluted that the colonists had stopped drinking from it, and in time it became a sewer, still emptying into the harbour. As the city grew up around the stream, it was covered over with sandstone blocks. Today the Tank Stream lies underground, partially encased in colonial-built tunnels.
Presenters

Phil Bennett is the Lead Heritage Advisor, responsible for managing over 200 heritage-listed assets at Sydney Water, including the Tank Stream. With a background in architecture, cultural heritage management and archive management, Phil is a skilled interpreter of the evidence we can see in the Tank Stream today.

Robert Allen is a Service Delivery Officer responsible for condition assessment and capital works on Sydney Water’s Stormwater Assets. He has a great interest in Sydney’s history and how the city landscape has grown around the environment and our use of water resources.

Louise Roberts is the Education and Community Partnerships Officer responsible for Sydney Water’s tour program and educational resource development. With a background in teaching history and geography, Louise has managed the development of the tours and resources for the Tank Stream.

In partnership with Sydney Water.

16. If this promotion is interfered with in any way or is not capable of being conducted as reasonably anticipated due to any reason beyond the reasonable control of the Promoter, the Promoter reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to the fullest extent permitted by law: (a) to disqualify any entrant; or (b) subject to any written directions from a regulatory authority, to modify, suspend, terminate or cancel the promotion, as appropriate.
