Escaping Exile by Sara Dobie Bauer - Book Review, Interview & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Suze

It’s the beginning of the nineteenth century. Vampire Andrew is living on a tropical island, where he was sent after he went too far while feeding. His exile is boring and lonely. The only other people on the island are cannibals, a group he doesn’t want to have anything to do with. The highlight of his stay is a shipwreck. The cannibals capture everyone on the ship besides Edmund, an English aristocrat with a passion for dangerous animals. Will Edmund survive being stranded on an island ruled by cannibals with a vampire as his savior?

Andrew likes Edmund a lot and nurses him back to health. He knows he has to fight for his human to keep him out of the hands of the cannibals. Will Edmund when he’s finally recovered feel the same about Andrew? Do they stand a chance together and will they be able to survive the dangerous circumstances they find themselves in?

Escaping Exile is a great fast-paced and sexy story. Andrew is an ancient vampire. He doesn’t have much self control which is how he ends up on a tropical island. With Edmund he has to show some restraint, he can’t kill his only chance to have interesting company. When sparks fly Andrew’s biggest dreams come true, but the situation they’re in makes their reality quite daunting. I couldn’t wait to see where that would lead. I loved their chemistry and Edmund’s fabulous fearless attitude. He’s challenging Andrew and that’s exactly what the dangerous vampire needs.

Sara Dobie Bauer has a fantastic captivating writing style. She doesn’t need many words to tell a complete story. I loved her gorgeous setting and intriguing main characters. Her story is hot, entertaining and original. Escaping Exile is a promising start of the Escape Trilogy and I’m already looking forward to the other two stories.

Advice

If you love sexy vampire stories with an original setting Escaping Exile would be an excellent choice. Keep in mind that this is the first book in the Escape Trilogy and that the ending will make you curious to read more.

Interview

1) Can you tell a little bit about yourself?

I’m a full time writer living in small town Ohio. I love all things Halloween and spooky, hence my obsession with paranormal romance. I have a sexy husband and two adorable fur babies. When not writing, I’m doing hot yoga or ogling Tumblr. (I have a Benedict Cumberbatch and Timothee Chalamet addiction.)

2) What’s the inspiration behind the island of Escaping Exile?

I spent my honeymoon on Ambergris Caye in Belize. I’m not suggesting Ambergris Caye has cannibals or vampires (as far as I know), but there’s something very romantic about island life, surrounded by turquoise water and palm trees. There’s also something menacing about it, knowing there are alligators and poisonous spiders just waiting to come at you.

3) Can you describe the main characters in six words each?

Andrew: Bad boy gay New Orleans vampire.

Edmund: Sexy brilliant British shipwrecked human naturalist.

4) What do you find the most fascinating about the paranormal genre?

The mixture of real and fake, monster and man. I live in the real world, so I don’t run into many witches or vampires. As a huge Harry Potter fan, I wanted to attend Hogwarts but never got my letter. Life is grand, but I like adding the touch of the supernatural. There is indeed magic all around; my books just make it more obvious.

5) If you could be transported to another time and place, which era would you choose, where would you go and what would you do?

1920s Paris, France. I want to dress like a flapper, hang with F. Scott and Zelda, and drink and smoke too much while discussing literature.

6) You write about completely falling for someone, what does true love mean to you?

True love isn’t about sex and romance. Those things are wonderful obviously, but true love means finding your best friend … and then adding the sex and romance. True love also means accepting someone for who they are. Yes, every part of them, even the part that leaves dirty laundry on the floor and forgets to do dishes. True love is laughter, too. If you can’t laugh with the person you love, they’re not worth it.

7) How did your writing journey start?

My parents bought me a journal when I was in elementary school, and I wrote an angst-ridden short story about a blind girl falling for a guy in a wheelchair. I’m way less angst-ridden now, but I still write about love because falling in love is fascinating.

Cool You love Tim Burton films, what’s your favorite character and which film would you have liked to star in?

Jack Skellington is my favorite Tim Burton character, and I want to live in The Nightmare Before Christmas. If I ever find Halloween Town, I’m moving there.

9) Can you tell a bit more about your photo shoots and the link with your books?

I do a themed photo shoot for every new book series. For the Bite Somebody series, I wore vampire teeth and bathed in a bath of blood. For the Enchanted series, I dressed as a witch and wrapped myself in a boa constrictor. For The Escape Trilogy, I posed in romantic, lacy gear on a beach. My hair color has been different for every shoot to keep things interesting. I’m theatrical, so I like adding some drama to a new book release. Plus, the differing promo shots I get are priceless on social media.

10) What are your plans for the future?

Deep question, but for now, I’m focused on The Escape Trilogy, which will come to a close in early 2019. I have several short stories being released in the coming months, and I’m writing a new adult novel at present that mixes horror, comedy, and romance. The future is more writing and reading and photo shoots and having fun.
