The last two decades has seen a huge shift in the discourse regarding hemp and cannabis within Australia.

With an ever-growing push to legalise the plant for medicinal, industrial, and recreational purposes, Brisbane will host its first Hemp, Health & Innovation (HHI) Expo next week.

With almost a century of misinformation and 'reefer madness' surrounding the plant, it's high time Australia had a serious discussion around the potential benefits of increasing public access to the plant. And with a live hemp crop to be displayed at the Brisbane expo, as well as celebrity chef Pete Evans being added to the speaker line-up, there is plenty to discover about an often misunderstood plant.

Hemp, or industrial hemp, is a strain of the cannabis sativa plant species that is grown specifically for the industrial uses of its derived products. Hemp has lower concentrations of THC and higher concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD), which decreases or eliminates its psychoactive effects.


The Hemp, Health & Innovation Expo takes place at Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre 12-13 October.
