This week’s book is ‘Capturing Nature: Early Scientific Photography at the Australian Museum 1857–1893’ by curator and historian Vanessa Finney. This stunning book showcases artefacts from the Australian Museum and uncovers the ‘hidden treasures recorded on these glass plates, along with the stories of the museum’s curators, taxidermists and scientists who worked on the growing collection of mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, insects and paleontological specimens during the last half of the 19th century’. Published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name, ‘Capturing Nature’ gives readers a unique insight into the work that Australian Museum scientists were doing at this time and the way that they used photography to capture their specimens.
