love your trees
The Love Your Trees photo competition will run for four weeks between 9 June and 7 July.
Love Your Trees aims to raise awareness of Ku-ring-gai’s ‘urban forest’ and the importance of retaining mature native trees.
Launching this Thursday, the photo competition coincides with the public exhibition of the Council’s draft Urban Forest Strategy. The Strategy proposes a number of actions to preserve Ku-ring-gai’s tree canopy and encourage residents to look after trees in their property and neighbourhood.
The Love Your Trees competition has two age categories, for photographers aged 6 to 15 years and for those aged 15 years and older.
One winner from each age group will be randomly drawn and can choose either a $100 native plant voucher for the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden Nursery or a $100 voucher for the Treetops high ropes adventure at St Ives Showground.
All images submitted by the community can be viewed online.
Mayor Jeff Pettett, who recently released a video praising the qualities of Ku-ring-gai’s tree canopy, said the photo competition was ‘a fun way to get our residents thinking about the value of trees’.
“Residents who are new to Ku-ring-gai may not realise that trees play an important part in keeping our homes cool in summer and providing habitat for many birds and animals.”
The Mayor added that for a small fee Council staff could visit residents homes and give them advice on looking after their trees.
“If trees are maintained and looked after it’s quite rare that they need to be removed completely.”
Entrants can submit their photos at krg.nsw.gov.au/loveyourtrees from Thursday 9 June and share them on social media using the hashtag #loveyourtrees
Comments on the Council’s Urban Forest Strategy are open until Friday 8 July.
