Win tickets to Queensland Theatre’s thrilling adaptation of Othello
Betrayal. Jealousy. Revenge. Three words synonymous with Shakespearean tragedies, but perhaps none as much as Othello. From September 10 to October 1, this classic tale will be brought to the Queensland Theatre stage – but not as you know it. Forget the contemporary Ottoman-Venetian War – this reimagined tale (adapted by renowned theatre veterans Jimi Bani and Jason Klarwein) sees Captain Othello leading his Torres Strait battalion to protect the coast of Far North Queensland as the Imperial Japanese Navy encroaches on Australia. That’s not Othello’s only concern – he has secretly married the daughter of a wealthy cane farmer, and her spurned suitor is plotting his revenge against the captain.
This thrilling tri-lingual (Kala Lagaw Ya, Yumpla Tok and English) production illuminates the vital role of the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion during World War II, which saw 800 Torres Strait Islanders – including Jimi Bani’s grandfather and great grandfather – signed up to protect the northern tip of Australia. The infusion of Othello with the history of the battalion brings together two powerful artistic cultures — Shakespeare and Wagadagam — creating an unforgettable and entirely unique theatre experience.
To celebrate this suspenseful adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello hitting the stage, The Weekend Edition has partnered with Queensland Theatre to give one lucky reader and three friends tickets to the opening night of Othello on Thursday September 15, including post-show hospitality. The total prize value is $400 – enter below for your chance to win.
