http://www.vit.vic.edu.au/wtd10/Win 1/10 iPads for Teachers' DayCelebrated in over 100 countries, World Teachers’ Day was inaugurated in 5th October 1994 by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to commemorate the 1966 joint signing of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
In adopting this recommendation, governments unanimously recognised the importance of competent, qualified and motivated teachers in society.
Internationally World Teachers’ Day is celebrated on the first Friday in October. However, as this is usually during Australian school holidays, Australia celebrates the day on the last Friday in October of each year.
World Teachers’ Day acknowledges the efforts of teachers in an increasingly complex, multicultural and technological society. It is a day on which students, parents and community members can demonstrate their appreciation for the contributions that teachers have made to their community.

Nominate a teacher who has made a real difference with their students, colleagues or community. As part of World Teachers’ Day, the Victorian Institute of Teaching will present ten nominees with a certificate of recognition and an iPad (plus professional development opportunities for iPad usage).

How this teacher made a difference... (100 words)World Teachers' Day competition 2010
Nominate a teacher who has made a difference with their students, colleagues or community. As part of World Teachers' Day on Friday 29 October, the Victorian institute of Teaching will recognise teachers nominated by their community. The nominated teacher will have the opportunity to win one of the 10 Institute World Teachers' Day awards.
Terms and Conditions
1. Entry into the World Teachers' Day Competition 2010 is open to all Victorian provisionally and fully registered teachers. Entries must be submitted online.
2. Nominations must be completed online by 5.00 pm on Friday 15 October 2010.
3. Any provisionally and full registered Victorian teacher may be nominated by a community member, fellow teacher, principal or student.
4. Authenticity of nominations will be the responsibility of the judging panel.
5. Entries will be judged:
* on contribution to community as shown in the nomination form
* by a short character reference with the nominator/principal.
6. The judges' decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Fantastic prizes
A fantastic prize is on offer for the ten winning nominees. Each winner will receive a certificate of recognition and an iPad (plus professional development opportunities of iPad usage).
The 10 winners will be announced and on the Institute's website and be awarded the prize and certification World Teachers' Day or at a mutually convenient time.
