He goes by the temporary nickname JJ, but as this gorgeous New Zealand fur seal makes a fresh start on the Sunshine Coast, we need your help to name him.
Estimated at 15 to 18 months old, the marine mammal arrived at UnderWater World last week via the Australian Marine Wildlife Research and Rescue organisation, which found him washed up on an Adelaide beach.
Severely malnourished, weighing just 5kg and missing an eye, his survival was very much touch and go. But after being nursed back to health he has now made a permanent home at UnderWater World, where he is gradually being introduced to the other seals and will hopefully one day join the seal shows staged on Seal Island.
UWW spokesman Neil Ward said while the animal was initially apprehensive after its traumatic ordeal, it was getting to know its new home and had shown a playful nature.
And in this spirit we are inviting Maroochy Journal readers to come up with a permanent name for the seal to celebrate his new lease on life.
It can be as colourful, cute or quirky as you like and we’d love to hear the reasons behind your suggestions. So put your thinking caps on and have a go.
The winner will receive a family pass for two adults and two children to UWW, worth $90. For themselves they will also win a Close Encounter Pack, which offers an introduction to UWW’s animal attractions. It includes an Otter Adventure with photo (you must be at least 16), a Seal Encounter with photo and a behind the scenes tour. This prize is worth $195.
Conditions of entry: Competition opens on November 12 and closes November 18 with last entries received at 10am. The winner will be decided on November 19 by a judging panel including Maroochy Journal editor David Crossen and UWW representative Neil Ward. They will be officially notified by email and published on the websitehttp://maroochy-journal.whereilive.com.au/competitions/story/help-find-a-name-for-this-survivor/Question: "What do you think UnderWater World should name its young New Zealand fur seal and why?"
