Set in 1927 the story follows Meredith, an unmarried 35 yr old who arrives at a remote lighthouse island to assist her cantankerous uncle Wadsworth, as he takes up his new position as supervisor looking into the running of all the lighthouses.
It is a lonely life for Meredith as she has little to do, apart from typing up her uncle’s reports and house keeping.
Through loneliness, she has a brief liaison with the head lighthouse keeper, who is then dismissed and leaves the island with his family.
The only other person on the island is the assistant keeper who is very withdrawn and war damaged.
Meredith then has to cope with her Uncle dying, and a ferocious storm that lashes the island for days, with only Fleet, the sullen keeper, for company .
Meredith tries desperately to find some connection, and some companionship with him.
