Win free fishing gear!

John Szymanski from Strikeback Tackle in Cowaramup has kindly donated sustainable fishing gear items for fishing enthusiasts! John donated fish and line retriever and Bioline, clear biodegradable fishing line, a safer alternative to fishing.

To celebrate our new partnership with Keep Australia Beautiful’s Clean Marine program we are offering all River Guardian members the chance to win some must-have fishing gear.

Clean Marine is a joint initiative between Keep Australia Beautiful WA, Department of Fisheries, Swan River Trust, Department of Transport and Department of Environment and Conservation. Clean Marine’s partners will provide information and resources to recreational fishers and boaters.

Marine debris research has shown that about 70 per cent of marine litter ends up on the seabed, 15 per cent ends up on beaches and 15 per cent remains floating on the water’s surface.

Keep Australia Beautiful WA Chair Mel Hay said all river and ocean users were responsible for keeping the waterways litter-free and protecting Australia’s marine wildlife.

“All too often a beautiful beach or on the river is spoiled by litter dumped by irresponsible people,” he said. “Clean Marine is the result of a fantastic partnership between WA’s Government and nongovernment agencies, including Recfishwest, and now we need the community to get involved and help spread the litter free message.”

Visit Keep Australia Beautiful’s website and search under Clean Marine and tell us how you can participate in litter free fishing.

Send your entry to guardians@swanrivertrust.wa.gov.au by Monday, 31 January 2011.

Winner will be notified.
