As part of the Mothership's mission statement: “to provide a platform for Australian Jazz Orchestra composers to have their works rehearsed, recorded, published and performed" the Orchestra runs a National Big Band Composition Competition for Australian and New Zealand Big Band Composers in conjunction with APRA, ABC Classic FM, Finale and Jozzbeat. Winner of the 2009 competition, Andrew Murray, is pictured at right.
APRA has donated $3,500 for 1st Prize and 3 shortlisted competitors will this year travel to Melbourne to rehearse and perform their compositions with the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra. This years winning entry will also be published by Jozzbeat, Australia's leading print music publisher. This years' competition is being presented as part of the Stonnington Jazz Festival, with a finals concert on May 23rd, at Chapel on Chapel in Melbourne as a pre-cursor to the Mothership performance with Kristin Berardi. This year the JMO has added a Junior Division category open to secondary-school students, which includes a $500 cash prize and a mentorship with a top Australian composers to convert an 8-piece composition into a full work for big band.
Entries are due by Friday April 1, 2011 with the three Open Division finalists announced on April 14.
