Win 1/5 Another Year DVDs

Review by Betty Lewis

Another Year

After having tickets for this  film several months back, we now have the DVD for our May competition.

The multi award winning  Mike Leigh directs this drama,’ Another Year’, which has  been critically acclaimed, and stars Jim Broadbent, Ruth Sheen and Lesley Manville.

Over the course of a year, a happily married couple  Tom and Mary, (  played by Broadbent and Sheen),  are regularly visited by friends and family, these include their 38 yr old son Joe, a community lawyer, their friend Ken, who feels he is leading a meaningless life, and Gerri a work colleague of  Mary’s, who also seems emotionally  unstable.

As the seasons roll by, Tom and Mary have to cope with  the visits of these unhappy  folk and listen to why they feel  life  has passed them by,  at the same time trying to cheer them up . (Their son Joe is reasonably happy).

I am surprised that Tom and Mary manage to stay happily married, as they are surrounded by such miserable people.

Although there is some really good acting in this film,  it was very slow moving and slightly depressing.  I thought the ending was unsatisfactory, but maybe that was just me.
Go for it, give it a tweet!
