Director Álex de la Iglesia brings us one of the craziest films of the year, The Last Circus (aka: A Sad Trumpet Ballad, Balada triste de trompeta), winner of the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival. The year is 1937 and a “Happy” circus clown is interrupted mid-performance and forcibly recruited to fight against National soldiers in the Spanish Civil War. Singlehandedly overwhelming an entire platoon with only a machete, he’s captured by the government and sentenced to hard labour. Fast forward to 1973: the final days of the Franco regime. Javier (Carlos Areces), the happy clown’s son, dreams of following in his father’s career footsteps but has seen too much tragedy in his life. He’s simply not funny and is only equipped to play a Sad Clown. Finding work in a circus, Javier must play “straight man” to the troupe’s brutish Happy Clown, Sergio (Antonio de la Torre), who humiliates him daily in the name of entertainment. Natalia (Carolina Bang), a gorgeous acrobat, is the wife of the monstrous Sergio. Falling deeply in love with her, Javier attempts to rescue Natalia from her cruel husband but she is torn between the tender Sad Clown and the lustful Happy Clown. With neither man willing to give up Natalia, this twisted love triangle evolves into a ferocious battle, escalating to unbelievable heights in this absurd, shocking, irreverent and unforgettable film.
