The original idea for the film was born from a conversation between the film’s writer/producer/actor Frank Lotito and his manager Joe Accurso as they travelled home from a successful stand-up comedy tour across 80 venues, in which Frank featured.
In a contemporary society where children leave home later and later, Frank knew the story of “a 35-year-old guy who lives at home with his mum but falls in love and decides he has
to move out” was widely relatable.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re Greek Australian, or Italian Australian, we’ve all had a similar experience and it’s funny that you’ll go to a Greek family and there’ll be plastic on the carpet or plastic on the couches, and then you’ll go to an Italian family and there’s the plastic … And you know, that doesn’t happen overseas, that just happens here and again it’s this thing: we’re trying to hold onto stuff. Our furniture, we want that furniture that we bought in 1960 to be pristine, to look like it was when we bought it, so we put plastic on it, and that’s kind of what we do with our kids, or what our parents did with us. They tried to wrap us in plastic so that we weren’t harmed, so that we were protected.”
A personal film that is full of heart, Big Mamma's Boy is also a story directly from the heart. Producers Frank Lotito and Matteo Bruno of Valarc Films are both of Italian background, Frank Lotito’s father is from Calabria and his mother from Sicily while producer Matteo Bruno is the first member of his family born outside Northern Italy.
The most important thing, says Frank, is that audiences “come out of the cinema with a big smile on their face. Just like with stand-up, I want people to forget about their everyday life for two hours and enjoy themselves on this rollercoaster ride of romance and mayhem; just really let themselves go and have a good time.
