For the casual filmgoer, Japanese cinema is known for its eclectic pop culture entries – which include kitsch comedies, samurai dramas and anime – but in reality it’s a country embracing a cinematic rebirth, and delivering powerful, thoughtful and confronting films. And this contemporary brand of filmmaking will be clearly on display at the upcoming Japanese Film Festival, with this year marking the event’s biggest line-up to date.
Just a couple of festival highlights include Japan’s biggest box office hit this year, Thermae Romae; the acclaimed family portrait, A Chronicle of My Mother; the Japanese supernatural thriller, Goose Bumps – the Movie; and the heart warming animated family flick, Friends: Naki on the Monster Island.
