PAINTED SKIN THE RESURRECTION is Chinese oriental mysticism at its finest. In the fantasised world of Painted Skin, we learn of the traditional demon lore. According to the ancient legend, it takes hundreds of years for a demon to attain the form of a human. Even then, lacking a true heart, a demon cannot truly experience the human condition. However, it is said that if a human heart is freely offered to a demon, then it is able to become a mortal and experience real life.

The supernatural fantasy follows a diabolical Fox spirit, Xiaowei (Zhou Xun) and her quest to become human as she breaks free from her icy prison. Meanwhile, Princess Jing (Zhao Wei in her breakout role) flees her crumbling kingdom seeking her one true love, wearing a mask of pure gold to hide her malicious scars. Destiny brings Xiaowei and Jing together in a story about mythical love affairs between mortal men and the alluring women of another world.

The beautiful and majestic world in Painted Skin comes from the creative mind of director, Wuershan. Wuershan's intention was to create a world never seen before in a fantasy film, whether from East or West. Tasked with such a heady goal, art director Hao Yi travelled extensively across Asia to find inspiration for his production design, from cultures as diverse as Japan, India, Tibet and Turkey, as well as ancient China.

Visual effects supervisor Koan Hui is heavily credited for translating the complex and intense emotions of the film into visuals that blend with the narrative. Hui was instructed to create a mystical fantasy epic that captured a uniquely Eastern sense of imagery. The result is a visually distinctive aesthetic in harmony with a story about passion, beauty and transformation.
