‘If it’s going to be a funeral…let’s have the best funeral ever.’ These words belong to James Murphy, the creative genius and music prodigy that gave the world one of the most prolific bands of the past generation, LCD Soundsystem.
Throughout the course of their bewildering success, rumours began to swirl that one of the most celebrated and influential bands in recent memory was to be disbanded. Eventually, the rumours proved to be true. On the night of April 2, 2011, LCD and their frontman James Murphy performed in front of a sold out Madison Square Garden, marking the event as the last time people will ever see them perform live again.
Their final headline show was heralded as a near four-hour extravaganza. Murphy and co. wanted to make sure their departure from the music scene would be remembered fondly and to say thanks to their passionate fans, they delivered the most moving and emotional performance the sold out New York crowd had ever seen.
Shut Up and Play the Hits is the film that follows James Murphy in the crucial 48 hours that lead up to the most important gig of his life, and documents the imperative concert that brought dance fans together for one last party. The documentary launched at Melbourne Film Festival last August and has since, played at sold out festivals and outdoor screenings across Australia.
