Lawless by John Hillcoat
Lawless is based on the true story of the bootlegging Bondurant gang of brothers, threatened by a new deputy in Depression-era Franklin County Virginia. Tom Hardy is formidable in this role, and is said to be this generation's next Marlon Brando. He also rocks a mean cardigan (or Hardigan, as it's come to be known).
9. Donnie Brasco by Mike Newell
What happens when an FBI undercover agent infiltrates the mob and finds he identifies more with the mafia life than his regular one? Johnny Depp happens, that's what (with Al Pacino of course, who features in half the movies in this list!)
8. Scarface by Brian De Palma
John D from our Post-Production team picks the 1983 version of Scarface (we had to Google this to discover there's a 1932 version, the things you learn on the job). Another iconic movie of its time, you really can't go past Al Pacino's Tony Montana - the Cuban accent, the clothing, the thuggery, the Michelle Pfeiffer babe factor and the line to end all shoot out lines: 'Say hello to my little friend'.
7. The Untouchables by Brian De Palma
Said to have inspired the latest release of Gangster Squad, The Untouchables is the original 'good guys gone bad' to help save their city from the clutches of Al Capone (played by a very convincing DeNiro). And they sure do it in style. According to Katie H, from our Communications team,, 'you can't beat Kevin Costner at his peak'.
6. Casino by Martin Scorsese
Starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone, Casino follows the rise and fall of two best friends in a struggle over money, power, greed and a trophy wife with serious issues. This marks yet another Scorsese film to make the cut. Nice one.
5. Once Upon a Time in America by Sergio Leone
Roadshow's resident film buff Aaron R says 'Sergio Leone delivers an epic tale the likes of which Coppola and Scorsese have never achieved.' Big call! It's certainly one of the longest gangster films of all time, but there's just something about this Sergio Leone classic you can't go past, like the haunting Ennio Morricone soundtrack, or the unmistakable bond between James Wood and Robert DeNiro as childhood pals growing up in the Brooklyn ghetto.
4. The Departed by Martin Scorsese
The Departed pits an undercover state cop who has infiltrated the Irish Mafia against a mole in the police force working for the same mob. Pete from our Creative department names this as hands down the best gangster film and even his favourite film of all time. 'The Departed is the ultimate portrayal of good vs. evil in the criminal underworld of Boston. Nicholson, DiCaprio, Wahlberg, Sheen and Damon give flawless performances.'
3. The Godfather Part II by Francis Ford Coppola
This gets a mention for the early Robert DeNiro flashbacks alone, but also because it manages to sustain itself as one of the incredible sequels to an already hard to beat original.
Itâs also Matt from Publicityâs pick of the crop, informing us that 'When DeNiro won the Oscar, that marked the first time two different actors won the Academy Award for playing the same character in a film franchise'. One for the film trivia buffs out there.
2. Goodfellas by Martin Scorsese
'There was Johnny Two Times...we call him that cause he says everything two times'.
Martin Scorsese's epic film is about a small time gangster who tells the story of climbing the mob ladder. And you know what they say about climbing mob ladders - what goes up, must come down. Certainly not this film's legendary status which continues to go up. This is Jon S from Digital's pick but only because The Sopranos didn't count (sorry television).
....and Drum roll please!
1. The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola
A gangster film you can't refuse. Francis Ford-Coppola brings to life the quintessential classic mafia saga based on the books by Mario Puzo. Replete with many unforgettable moments, lines and scenes that have withstood the test of time, The Godfather continues to be appropriated and discussed time and time again throughout the world. Sheree from Digital picks this as her favourite, 'if for nothing else than the best improvised line in any film ever, and for putting cannoli back on the map'.
