Amour is the film that sobered audiences in late 2012. Acclaimed director Michael Haneke (The White Ribbon, Funny Games) this time turns his lens on the elderly, exploring the decline of ageing with a brutal realism that could be considered a silent vote for the legality of euthanasia.
Amour won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film at this year’s Oscars. At another ceremony, The Golden Globes, Haneke said in his acceptance speech: ”If this prize is in my hands, I think the base it’s maybe for me and the crew, but the golden globe is for these both fantastic actors.”
Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) are in their eighties. They are cultivated, retired music teachers. Their daughter, who is also a musician, lives abroad with her family. One day, Anne has an attack, and the couple’s bond of love is severely tested.
