It’s the documentary that critics are calling “one of the best Australian films of ANY kind in years” and In Bob We Trust has now been confirmed to release in Brisbane for an exclusive season at Schonell Theatre from November 21.
After nearly four decades faithfully serving his parish in South Melbourne, Father Bob Maguire has developed a reputation as a controversial and irreverent figure. His battles with church hierarchy have become legend. His forthright approach, insightful wit and dedication to improving the lives of others has made him an iconic figure not just in his parish but throughout Australia.
Despite the promise of a ‘parish for life’, the Archbishop of Melbourne invited him to retire but Father Bob was not leaving without a fight. What follows is a David and Goliath story of biblical proportions as the dissident priest, loved by the faithful and the secular alike, resists the authority of the church to remove him, only to encounter treachery and betrayal.
In Bob We Trust follows irreverent philosopher and working class hero Father Bob over three years, on a journey which is by turns inspirational and shocking, eye-opening and joyous, revealing behind-the-scenes drama that has to be seen to be believed.
Father Bob is joined on the big screen by many fellow travellers from his outreach work and the South Melbourne Parish, and by his long-time collaborator, John Safran, co-host with Father Bob on Triple J’s Sunday Night Safran.
In Bob We Trust is produced by GHOST Pictures which was established in 2000 by Lynn-Maree Milburn, Andrew de Groot, and Richard Lowenstein. Their collaborations have resulted in some of Australia’s most iconic films including Dogs in Space, Memories and Dreams, He Died With a Felafel in His Hand, and Autoluminescent: Rowland S. Howard.
