The Best Documentary category is always a Mad-fest, and this year was no exception. The deeply compelling THE ACT OF KILLING (out now on DVD and Digital) leads the charge, while the similarly-frightening political thriller DIRTY WARS (which releases April 2nd) promises to provide stiff competition. For the less political Academy voters, CUTIE AND THE BOXER (due out May 2014) may prove a winner: this charming and heartbreaking tale of art, love and sacrifice in New York certainly wowed Aussie festival audiences.
Best Foreign Language film was a ripe playground for Madman titles too: Mads Mikkelsen-led THE HUNT (out now on DVD and Digital) is up for the award, as is the amazing Palestinian offering and festival favourite OMAR (coming soon to DVD and Digital) and, still glowing from their Golden Globes win last week, our mates over at Palace Films also scored a nod for the glorious THE GREAT BEAUTY (in cinemas January 23rd, and coming soon to home entertainment).
Finally, it's great to see Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki receive an Oscar® nomination for Best Animated Feature for his whimsical, beautiful swan song THE WIND RISES. A win in this category would be a fitting farewell to Miyazaki, whose work has influenced so many of his Hollywood contemporaries.
Of course, being the purveyors of quality film that we are here at Madman, we don't need to pin all of our hopes of Oscar® glory on this year: we already have a massive list of Oscar winners in our collection! Here's your chance to win them all!
